Building Secure Attachments

Building secure attachments in the first months and years of life is crucial to the development of emotionally healthy children. Children who are connected with their caregivers are better positioned to do well in school and form healthier relationships throughout life. However, relatively few parents understand the importance of forming these secure attachments. To address the need, Paul G. Allen's Vulcan Productions, in collaboration with social change agency Cause & Affect, PBS, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), developed Early Moments Matter, a valuable toolkit that provides parents and caregivers with information to help their infants with their first steps in emotional development.

What's Inside?

Early Moments Matter includes important information on early childhood attachment for parents, families, child services professionals, and others. It introduces ways in which parents and caregivers can help their children build secure attachments, examines challenges encountered in the attachment process, and provides suggestions on how they can be overcome.

The toolkit includes a:

  • 30-minute DVD and quick-reference guide answering attachment and parenting questions
  • 5 Small Steps with Long-Lasting Effects magnet
  • 10 Ways to Connect with your Baby bookmark

This Emotional Life

Early Moments Matter is part of the broader This Emotional Life campaign, which galvanizes awareness of and solutions for mental health issues. Led by Vulcan Productions and Cause & Affect, in collaboration with PBS, the campaign kicked off with a three-part documentary series that premiered nationally on PBS in January 2010. Visit the campaign's extensive website (www.pbs.org/thisemotionallife) for more information, including videos, expert blogs, and updated online resources.
